METHODS IN RECONSTRUCTION OF THE ABDOMINAL WALL DEFECTS

Abstract
The defects of the abdominal wall could be brought about either congenitally, for instances in such cases as.omphalocele or gastroschisis, or by various acquired causes-trauma, excision of tumors, excision bf burn scar, tissue iiecrosis caused by infection, hematoma after abdominal surgery, tissue necrosis after radiation therapy and so on. The reconstruction of the abdominal wall defects is a kind of challenging field in which many factors-sex, age, the site of Lhe defects, the size of the defects, other accompanying medical problems-should be taken into consideration and the most appropriate choice be made among so many methods to achieve an acceptable result.
As for the techniques of the reconstruction of the abdominal wall defects, many authors have developed and reported diverse methods. To summarize, primary closure, skin graft, local skin flaps, various myocutanaous flaps, free flaps, fascia graft, Marlex mesh, tissue expansion, etc could be used in the reconstruction of the abdominal wall defects.
Authors have reviewed and analyzed the medical records of 39 cases who had been operated on for abdominal wall defects of various types from January, 1989 to February, 1992 in Seoul
